SEM is actively seeking a Commercial Underwriter.

As Commercial Underwriter you will work with our Agents/Brokers to increase the sale of commercial products and product development. You will be responsible for underwriting risks and assisting with the preparation of new business and renewal quotations. You will liaise with Agents/Brokers and Inspection Staff, with the best interest of the company and policyholders in mind, to build a profitable book of business according to established company parameters while maintaining our mutual underwriting philosophy. You will collaborate with Management to continuously improve processes and communication amongst Staff and Agents/Brokers.


  • Underwrite risks in compliance with underwriting guidelines and be knowledgeable of policy wordings
  • Preparation of new business and renewal quotations
  • Be available on a daily basis to communicate with Agents/Brokers and support staff in regard to underwriting procedures and decisions
  • Assist in the development of Agents/Brokers through training, coaching, mentoring, and guidance on commercial risk assessment
  • Collaborate on the formulation and development of a marketing, sales, and product development strategy for commercial products
  • Maintain current awareness of market and trends by researching market information to contribute to the development of pricing strategies
  • Request, review, and take appropriate action on Loss Inspection Control Reports
  • Analyze and monitor claim reports and take appropriate actions


  • A minimum of 3 years of insurance related experience, preferably in Commercial Underwriting/Sales
  • CIP designation or actively pursuing same
  • General insurance license (or obtained within 2 months)
  • CRM designation would be an asset
  • Excellent skills in communication (verbal/written), organization, time management, client service, decision making and problem solving
  • Comfortable with technology and the use of multiple programs including the Microsoft Office suite and our policy administration system
  • Bilingualism would be considered an asset
