Loss Control / Inspection at SouthEastern Mutual Insurance Company

We offer "No Charge" Property Inspections.

In the interest of policyholder safety a complete loss control inspection is offered to all insureds free of charge.

Our staff inspectors are WETT Certified to inspect wood heating installations and are trained to detect general electrical hazards. Since heating and electrical systems are a major source of fire losses, inspections can help detect possible hazards in these areas.

Safety Inspector, Roger Hebert, is a member of the NB Fire Prevention Officers Association, the Marritime Fire Prevention Technicians Association, and the International Association of Electrical Inspectors. Roger has been inspecting for the company for over 25 years.

Safety inspector, Jacques LeBlanc, is a member of the Maritime Fire Prevention Technicians Association and has been inspecting for the company for over 6 years.

      Safety Tips

  • Have a working smoke detector installed on each level of your home.
  • CO- detectors ( carbon monoxide detectors ) should be installed when heating with fossil fuels.
  • ABC rated Fire Extinguishers are an important safety tool.
  • Before installing a wood heating appliance, check with our company inspectors for helpful information on how to do the installation to meet code requirements.
  • Wood burning systems tend to build up creosote more in the spring and fall when we need less heat in our homes; we close the drafts of our appliances and as a result creosote does accumulate more.
  • Smoke pipes and chimneys should be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent flue fires.
  • Proper size fusing is important in keeping your family safe.
  • Fuses or breakers are the weak link in the circuit, providing you protection when needed.
  • Over fusing reduces the safety level of your electrical system-- this could lead to a fire or injury. You should use no higher than 15amp fuses for general household circuits for lights and electrical outlets.
  • Oil tanks and lines should be checked to prevent oil spills and costly claims. Properly installed lines should not have an odor/smell or have wet fittings.
